ISO 9001:2015 Amendment 1:2024 – Addressing Climate Change

In February 2024, ISO introduced Amendment 1:2024 to ISO 9001:2015, highlighting the need to incorporate climate change considerations into quality management systems. This update reflects the increasing importance of environmental sustainability in business excellence.

Key Changes in the Amendment

  1. Clause 4.1 – Understanding the Organisation and Its Context - Organisations must now determine whether climate change is a relevant factor affecting their operations. This involves assessing both direct impacts, such as extreme weather events, and indirect implications, including regulatory changes and evolving customer expectations.

  2. Clause 4.2 – Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties - The amendment adds a note stating that relevant interested parties may have climate-related requirements. This encourages businesses to consider the sustainability expectations of stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, and regulators.

What This Means for Organisations

By integrating climate change considerations into their quality management systems, organisations can:

Enhance Environmental Sustainability – Addressing climate risks within the QMS framework allows businesses to minimise their environmental impact and adopt sustainable practices.

Ensure Regulatory Compliance – Proactively considering climate-related issues helps businesses stay ahead of environmental regulations, avoiding penalties and operational disruptions.

Strengthen Stakeholder Relationships – Demonstrating a commitment to climate action can enhance an organisation’s reputation, fostering trust and loyalty among customers and partners.

Incorporating these considerations not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also positions organisations for long-term success in a climate-conscious market.
